A bed is only as good as what's underneath it.
Anybody can dump mulch on top of last year's weeds. It looks fine for about six weeks and then you're back where you started, except now there's four inches of mulch in the way.
We cut a real edge, strip out what's growing in there, lay fabric under stone beds, and set the plants with room to actually grow into the space instead of being crammed in for the photo.
Stone or mulch is a real decision and it depends on the bed. Mulch feeds the soil and looks warmer, but you're refreshing it every year or two. Stone costs more up front and is close to permanent — great along driveways and foundations, less great where you'll want to change the plantings later. We'll tell you which one makes sense for your bed rather than which one costs more.
If your beds have gotten away from you entirely, that's a cleanout, not a mulch job — and that's fine. We've pulled beds back from years of overgrowth and re-cut them from scratch.
